MMC-A2 PLUS
The Kollmorgen MMC-A2 PLUS drive represents a high-performance component in the MMC Standalone Smart Drives series, delivering advanced motion control and I/O processing in a compact, industrial-grade package. Designed for applications requiring precise coordination of multiple servo axes, this drive incorporates a 32-bit RISC processor with numeric coprocessor to execute complex motion algorithms with minimal latency. The drive operates on a wide 20–30 VDC input voltage range and supports up to 18 servo axes at 8 ms update rates, ensuring scalable performance for small to medium automation systems. Its robust construction and adherence to industrial standards make it suitable for continuous operation in demanding environments. With integrated application memory and flash storage, the MMC-A2 PLUS provides both high-speed task execution and reliable data retention.
The MMC-A2 PLUS is engineered with critical specifications that underpin its capabilities. It features 256 KB of application memory, 128 KB of RAM, and 64 KB of user memory to host and execute control routines. Non-volatile storage is handled by a 2 MB flash disk, while configuration backup is maintained by a 3 V coin cell battery (BR2032). The drive’s input power demands are defined by 450 mA plus I/O and expansion power, supplied at a nominal 24 VDC. Environmental compliance is achieved through EN50081-2, EN50082-2, EN61131-2 EMC standards, and the unit carries a UL and C-UL Listed E126417 safety listing. Real-time clock performance is specified at ±1 s/day accuracy at 25 °C, with variation of +2/–12 s/day accounting for temperature, voltage, and aging factors. Communication interfaces include a Picpro Port (RS232 up to 57.6 Kbps) and a User Port (RS232/RS485, RTS/CTS up to 19.2 Kbps).
Operational features of the MMC-A2 PLUS highlight its flexible axis support and I/O capabilities. The drive manages 18 axes at 8 ms or 4 ms, 16 axes at 2 ms, 8 axes at 1 ms, 3 axes at 0.5 ms, and 1 axis at 0.25 ms, allowing system designers to optimize throughput and cycle times. Operating temperature is rated from 5 °C to 55 °C, with storage tolerance between –40 °C and 85 °C, and operating humidity from 5% to 95% non-condensing. Its modular architecture supports additional I/O expansion and maintains consistent performance under full load. Firmware and application updates leverage the flash storage and coin cell backup for secure data handling, minimizing downtime during maintenance.
Integration of the MMC-A2 PLUS into automation platforms is simplified by its compliance with industry-standard protocols and clear configuration interfaces. The drive’s small footprint and panel-mountable design facilitate high-density installation in distributed control cabinets. Supported target applications include packaging machinery, pick-and-place systems, conveyor indexing, and other industrial automation tasks that demand synchronized multi-axis motion with dependable I/O processing. By capitalizing on the built-in processor, memory resources, and robust communication ports, control engineers can deploy advanced motion profiles and diagnostic routines without external processors or extensive wiring.
