SMC-100

The Kollmorgen SMC-100 is a high-performance single-axis motion controller from the SMC Motion Stepper Drives family manufactured by Kollmorgen. It features a powerful Texas Instruments TMS320 DSP CPU core driving real-time control, and delivers a 2 kHz servo rate for precise motion profiling. Housed in an aluminum, IP20-rated enclosure, the unit measures 115 × 45 × 118 mm and operates from a 24/48 VDC power supply. With galvanically isolated I/O and flexible fieldbus support, it addresses the demands of industrial automation systems that require compact size and reliable performance.

Equipped for advanced applications, the SMC-100 supports CANopen (DS 402) fieldbus communications and can optionally integrate an encoder interface for closed-loop feedback. Its 4 DI, 4 DO digital I/O channels are fully galvanic isolated, while a dedicated analog input enables high-resolution signal conditioning. The drive delivers up to 10 A phase current out of its isolated 24/48 VDC motor supply, and its 100 kHz PWM switching frequency ensures smooth torque delivery. Safety features include an automatic emergency stop activation upon bus communication loss and status diagnostics via green run and red error LEDs.

Operational flexibility is further enhanced by support for full-step, half-step, and microstep operating modes, enabling fine resolution motor control. The controller maintains stable performance across a wide ambient range of 0 °C to +60 °C, and can be stored between –10 °C and +70 °C without degradation. A two-color LED status indicator provides immediate visual feedback on power, run state, and fault conditions. Its compact form factor minimizes cabinet footprint while preserving robust mechanical integrity thanks to the aluminum housing.

Integration into existing systems is seamless through its standardized CANopen interface and optional encoder connectivity, facilitating both open-loop stepper and closed-loop servo deployments. The SMC-100’s consistent galvanic isolation across power and I/O domains simplifies EMC compliance and ensures safe operation alongside sensitive electronics. Typical applications include precision positioning in packaging machinery, lab automation, and pick-and-place robotics.
